getting swept in the ALDS must be ok

with visions of adam dunn and mark teixeira dancing around in my head…

from a sid interview with uber GM terry ryan yesterday:

\”We can do it with the present club as long as we\’re all clicking together. It\’s just like last year. Everybody kept saying we had to do something [a trade]. Well, we maneuvered and we tweaked it a little bit, but for the most part the people that got it done were the same people that played for us in June and July.\”

got it done? really?

here\’s what you got done last season. you went on an improbable 49-27 run to end the season. you had to count on the royals (!) to beat the tigers on the last day of the season to make the playoffs. you got embarrassed while being swept by the oakland a\’s in the first round. am i to understand that you\’d be happy if we\’d get that result again this season? and this is your logic for not pursuing any deals for this time before the trade deadline?

huh. terry ryan has certainly made some amazing moves in his career, and has been recognized nationally for these. however, he has also made some clunkers, and i don\’t know if i see his logic here.

To be fair, the team was already in the playoffs going into the final weekend. The Royals only aided in winning the division instead of going in as the wild card. That said, the current team does have the same problem as last year: too much reliance on the pitching staff. If we added Dunn or Teixeira, that would certainly change things… I just don’t think that we can run out Redmond and Tyner as DH and expect to get it done. Not that it would be impossible, mind you. It’d just be nice not to have to rely on them.

I heard on KFAN with Sid’s son, that Ryan said that a trade was “more than likely” to happen. Left Field, 3B, DH… they NEED to do something with one of those, they SHOULD address two of them, and ideally they would address all three. We’ll see what happens… there is only have a week or two left until the trade deadline, right?

good point, alex– the royals’ beating the tigers didn’t decide playoffs vs. no playoffs. i stand (well, sit) corrected.

last night’s game completely underscored the notion of needing better run production. although, if we don’t take the next two from detroit, why bother? at that point i think we should become a seller instead of a buyer.

I wouldn’t be so quick to turn to selling. The Twins have approximately two hundred games left against Cleveland, who are the current wild card leaders. So there’s still the consolation prize to shoot for.

Meh, the twins don’t need to make it this year. It’s not like I’ll be able to catch the Yankees play here for the playoffs anyway.
