"The bread tastes like cake."

Interesting
article
in today's Strib.
I had no idea that we imported seasonal workers from overseas for northern Minnesota resorts.
It seems like it wouldn't be financially feasible for the workers, but apparently so.
Even more interesting to me is the comments toward the end of the article:
The students are amazed by Americans' dietary habits.
"The food here is a big shock to us because everything is so sugary," Wright said, laughing. "The bread tastes like cake."
"Americans drink a lot of coffee," Daimov said. "And ice cubes everywhere."
Of course you have to take everything a Brit says about food with a grain of salt, considering how
bland their food is; but regardless, it's a very interesting observation... and not too surprising.
The other thing I love is the ice cube thing. Americans do seem to have a fetish for ice cubes
that our friends in Europe do not share. When you stay at a hotel in Europe, there is no ice
machine down the hall. If you want ice, you generally need to get a bucket delivered up to your
room. When I stayed in Paris with my wife and her family, they are used to filling the bathtub up
with ice, and putting their beers in it... take a wild guess on how many times they had to call down
and have Pierre bring up a bucket of ice to fill a bathtub? :-) No wonder why they treated us
so rudely!
