iPod

Al's gambit yesterday got me thinking... I don't think I've shared with the simpleprop nation that I'm the proud owner of a new iPod. Yay technology.

I've actually had it for almost six weeks now. And, yes, it's a lot of cash to drop on what is essentially a toy. But I justified it with the fact that my commute time doubled when I moved out to Happy Valley. Thirty-five minutes on the bus each day, each way? I obviously need to drop three benjamins on an MP3 player.

Want to know what? It's totally worth it.

The hard part for me was loading it up with music. It probably took forty hours to rip all of my CDs to my Dell at home, and then sync everything down to the iPod. And I'm not, like, loaded with CDs. But I put nearly every one on there, and 1581 songs later, I've used up 3.3 GB. Yep. About 18% of capacity. So, I could've gotten away with the Shuffle, I guess, but this allows room for future expansion. Audio books. Songs purchased through iTunes. The Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits box set.

I've yet to embark on arguably the coolest feature: the playlist. Probably not news to you, but I'm a bit of a control freak: spreadsheets, parameters, what have you. So making a playlist isn't something I can do on a whim-- it needs to be calculated. Ensure that the proper mix of artists, albums, and moods are represented. One needs Excel to do this properly or, failing that, a legal pad and a couple pencils. However, the iPod has already made some enemies at home given the amount of time it took to load it with music, so I may have to wait a bit to create the perfect and proper playlists.

Regardless... it's pretty sweet, and it's nice to be able to support Mac after being away for eight years. Go out. Buy one. If you need excuses, let me know. I've thought of hundreds, and will be help.
