Hall of Fame
- Alex
Another year, another Hall of Fame induction, and Pete Rose still hasn't gotten in. Life is good.
The announcement came on Tuesday that Ryne Sandberg and Wade Boggs are this year's inductees. We've been discussing it
here. Sandberg was the career leader for homeruns by a second baseman until last year, and
Boggs had a tremendous career batting average and on-base percentage, so they both seem like worthy selections, even if it took Sandberg a few years to get there.
But what is it about the baseball HoF that inspires such debate? Is it that there are so many baseball players in general that there's room for there to
have been a LOT of very good and great careers? It doesn't seem like fans of any other sport get so worked up about who gets into their respective Halls of Fame.
Wade linked to an article supporting Steve Garvey by Jimmy Kimmel, and Jim Caple wrote a good story
for ESPN.com today supporting Bert Blyleven. It's hard to argue against either of those candidates, but yet it's not easy to say that they should absolutely
be in, either. Maybe that's what makes it so interesting - the large amount of gray area that comes as part and parcel with the sport.
Maybe that's why Dubya got out of the business. Yeow!
But seriously, folks, all this is yet another way of saying... only six more weeks until pitchers and catchers report! Especially since there's no hockey
this year, baseball is still king in this fans heart. Of course, if Beltran signs with the Yankees I might change my tune a little bit...
