Olympic Hopefuls
- Alex
First Gambit of the new year. Happy 2005 to all, and welcome back to SP.com for a new year of fun.
Jake loaned me a CD last night, and I'm here to share a tale of a brand new band that I heard four or five years ago. Honestly, I can't remember the
chronology of it, but we were at the Seedy Underbelly years ago listening to J Matt record a little demo with some other guys. It was pretty catchy stuff, and
I saw them play once at the Fine Line under the name El Camaro, but nothing else came of it.
Until now.
The band is now called The Olympic Hopefuls, they've got a mostly new lineup, and apparently they're getting some decent airplay. According
to their website (previously linked), they've just gotten airplay on Drive 105, and will have their single "Let's Go!" (or at least part of it) played on the
January 6th episode of The OC. So that's cool. The only problem I have with Let's Go! is that it's the one track I'm familliar with that they totally changed
the lyrics for, so to me it's like that second version of "Don't Cry" that Guns'N'Roses recorded - familliar and catchy, but vaguely wrong. Heh.
The disc is basically just some old-school pop music, which is kinda nice and refreshing. I'd say if you enjoy JET, you'll like this disc. Check 'em out.
