Talkin' Football
- Alex
Yeah, so I have to admit, the National Football League caught my attention a bit this weekend. I watched a few games, and some of them were even
entertaining. So what's the big news in that, you ask? Well, my interest caused me to check out the standings to see if anything interesting was happening.
It is, but not in a good way (at least, I don't think so). Let's look at each conference, and you'll get my drift.
In the NFC, the best team is the Eagles. They're 8-1. Not too surprising, since they were expected to be Super Bowl contenders. The team with the next
best record is the Falcons, at 7-2. This is frankly a shock, since they've looked awful at times this year. However, they do have a decent defense, and should
have a decent offense as well when it gets rolling. They should be contending for a wild-card and a team that the really good teams should worry about. Instead,
they'll probably get a first round bye in the playoffs.
Which brings us to the rest of the crap in the conference. There are five teams at 5-4 (The Giants, Vikings, Packers, Rams, and Seahawks), and four more
teams at 4-5 (The Bears, Lions, Saints, and Cardinals). Seriously, all these teams are flawed. I think the Packers or maybe the Rams are the best of those
teams, and two more of them are going to make the playoffs. The Bears have won three in a row with Craig Krenzel at QB fer chrissakes. The Packers started
1-4, and are now leading their division.
The AFC is a little more sane. The Steelers and Patriots are both 8-1, and both teams look good. After that, there are six teams at 6-3 (The Jets, Ravens,
Colts, Jaguars, Broncos, and Chargers). Four of those should make the playoffs, but even so there's not a truly scary team in there unless the Colts D pulls things
together.
What's my problem with this? Well... to be honest, it's kinda boring. Sure, there are a lot of teams still in contention for the playoffs, but they're
not teams that are really all that good. What do I care if the Chargers eek into the playoffs and lose in the first round? At least in the "old days" you
had four playoff teams from each conference and they were all good.
On the bright side, at least the Super Bowls are close games this way.
