Spyware & Adware
- wadE
Spyware and Adware have become buzzwords over the past few months as more and more
people have their computers taken over by these unwanted pests.
You know it's gotten to be a problem when the Strib has an
article
about it!
Good advice in this article. Get yourself a firewall to keep intruders from coming
in, and to keep any spyware from leaking information out.
"I recommend ZoneAlarm, a free firewall available from
www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp.
Click on 'Free ZoneAlarm and Trials,' then select 'Free Download.'"
There are a ton of free Spyware and Adware removal programs on the internet, but
don't just grab anything. Do a bit of research so you don't pick up a program that is
actually just more Spyware.
The other great bit of advice in the article is to use a browser other than Internet
Explorer. I know many of us at work have no choice, or we use websites to check our
bank statement or pay bills that only support IE. However, it's still a good idea to
have more than one browser on a computer. If IE gets hosed, this will allow you to get
out to the internet to download another copy of it, or to access the internet to find
a solution to you problem.
The best piece of advice I can give anyone on any computer problem is to type any
error messages into a browser with quotes (") around it. If there isn't any error message
to type, just type in a few words that best describe the problem. You aren't the first
person to have this problem, and more often than not someone has figured out how to fix
it...and in a way that just about any of us can follow.
