An article from today's news:
Austrian Tries to Dig Tunnel to Slovenia
GRAZ, Austria (AP) - An Austrian artist has dug into a project so ambitious not even his great-great-great grandchildren - or their great-great-great grandchildren - will see it completed: tunneling from Graz to a city in neighboring Slovenia.
Muhammad Mueller, who together with a friend launched the project Saturday in Graz, 120 miles south of Vienna, said he thinks digging the 42-mile tunnel to the Slovene border city of Gradec will take two people using shovels roughly 5,600 years.
Austrian television called the project ``probably the most long-term cultural project ever undertaken.''
Mueller, who converted to Islam, said he hoped the project would draw attention to religion, unemployment and other issues.
Y...eah. Every so often I read an article that brings to light how little I know about things outside the USA. This would be one of them. Can you really
just up and dig a 42 mile tunnel in Europe? Or did this guy have to get all the necessary digging permits, and does he have to watch out for power lines and
water mains and all that jazz? And can you cross a border in a tunnel? Is that legal? I'm so confused.
On top of that, does this guy even know how to dig a tunnel so that it won't collapse? This just seems like it's got Bad Idea Jeans written all over
it to me. Plus, his stated goal is to draw attention to religion, unemployment and other issues? Call me a fool, but I think most folks are aware of
the existence of those things already. I don't think anyone's going to suddenly say "Look! A really long tunnel! I should think about religion!"
That said, this guy's gonna be pretty ripped when it's all said and done. Maybe he can launch a million dollar enterprise - The Tunnel Digger Diet! Sure,
it's not quite as pain-free as all those other diets, but you'll get results.
In any case, can anyone get in the news these days? We should try that here - we can promote ourselves and say that the goal of the site is to draw attention
to fudge, and other chocolate-y good things. Get the press kits ready!
