Gambit Odds and Ends
- Alex
Gonna try and cover a little bit of everything today.
What I'm sure wadE meant to say yesterday was that no team in baseball had ever come back from being behind 3 games to none to even force a Game 7. So, now
that the Sox have won the series, they've really done the impossible! Twice! Heh.
What this means for me, personally, is that I will no longer have to sit through a seven minute rendition of "God Bless America" (Now with special 90-second
intro that no one's ever heard before!). Is it bad that that's as big a reason to cheer as any? Plus now I can actually call Brian and email Lisa without fear
of being some kind of jinx. So that's good.
On top of that, I can now say I've seen cops in riot gear on a baseball field during a game, while the game is taking place. How weird was that?! The only
thing that would've been more bizarre is if one of them had tackled Tony Clark on a pop up or something. And... if the situation was grave enough to halt play
for five minutes to get them on the field in the top of the 9th when the Yankees were on the field... why did they take them off when the Red Sox took the field
in the bottom of the 9th? Wouldn't you think they'd need as much, if not more protection? So odd...
Anyway...
So I was thinking about my creative process for writing something like the Collage article. (Thanks
for all the compliments everyone, by the way. Seriously.) And what usually ends up happening when I have an idea for an article like this is that I mentally
write it for a couple of weeks, in the hopes that when I actually sit down to do it that some of what I've thought about will come out naturally. Sometimes it
works, sometimes I sit there and stare at the blank page for an hour anyway.
But in all the pre-writes for Nic's section, I had always intended to add a bit from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Obviously, it didn't end
up making it in, and I'm happy with the article so it's not going to change. So I thought I'd put it here. There's a scene near the end where Carrey's
character is having his last memory of Winslet's character erased, which would mean they'd be like total strangers from here on out (since she's already had the
process done). Only Carrey's fighting it, so they're having different conversations than what actually happened, at least until the memory goes. So in the memory,
Carrey is walking out of the house (like he's "supposed" to), and Winslet turns and says to him:
Come back and make up a goodbye, at least.
Let's pretend we had one.
It's a great moment... and it really reflected back on me the way I've got all these really good memories (and some bad ones, sure)... but no sense of
ending. No good goodbye. Strangely, I think things would be better if I had one.
And finally...
Took a look at the stats page. That's always fun. We've had some hits for "la copa mundial" - good to see that my limited spanish vocabulary is coming in
useful. "Todd Zeile" has gotten a fair amount of monthly hits - who the hell wrote about him? And of course, your runaway leader... Sue Bird. I think wadE
needs to write another inflammatory article to get the Goldentee folks back and reading!
Haha. I'm out.
