Hurricanes, etc.
- Alex
So let me see if I've got this right: Hurricane Ivan hit Alabama/Louisiana last week. Then, as hurricanes do, it moved inland, rained a lot, took a right turn
on the jet stream, and headed for the Atlantic Ocean. When it got there, it took another right turn... and then another... and a sort of veer around Florida...
back into the Gulf of Mexico... and is now coming ashore again in Louisiana and moving into Texas (albeit as Tropical Storm Ivan this time).
Umm... what?
I know it's been a busy year for hurricanes, but isn't this just a wee bit odd? I thought I heard the guy on The Weather Channel this morning say it had happened
once before, but I didn't catch any more than that. Huh...
Ok, so a quick follow up on the Year in Music column. I picked up the disc by the band apprently
named DoctoRx (which I will continue to pronounce "The Doctor"). I must say, Danny Greaves continues to be
the man. He's teamed up with a guy named Rob Higgins to create a disc that I can best pigeonhole as "The Police, only a LOT heavier". Honestly, that doesn't
really cover it at all, but it sounds like a cool thing to say. The flat truth is that this is a really good rock album. It's straight-forward, at times
pretty simple, but good. You should check it out - there are three free downloads at the site as linked above.
The song that I'm currently obsessing over is the final track on that disc, Me and Nick Drake. It's just flat out catchy, toe-tappin' good. And I love
the last lines:
Take it from me
Cause I'll be takin' it from you
I guess that's the way
It should be in truth
You're babe to my ruth.
Love it. And through the magic of the internet (via their message board), we can even get Mr. Greaves's take on that last line:
"Babe has just always gone with Ruth as long as i could remember..so if someone were to say you're a 'babe to my ruth' ...just..something that's always been."
Something that's always been. Yup yup. Alright, I'm out.
