Bah Humbug!

Go here. Then come back.
Ok, for those of you too lazy, or reading this long after the link has died, the short
version is that Target will no longer allow Salvation Army bell ringers to ring their bells
outside of Target stores.
The rationalization for which is that they have a no solicitation policy, and
the Salvation Army has been the lone exception. With church groups, scout groups, and
other non-profit groups wanting to raise money as well, they felt it was "increasingly
difficult to have an exception to our policy, so we decided we would have no exceptions."
Maybe individual stores have some leeway, since I've been solicited to buy Girl Scout
cookies at Target stores before. Considering how valuable the stores have been to
the Salvation Army's income (more than $750,000 our of the $2 million they raised via bell
ringers) this is a pretty big blow.
Is there something wrong with having an exception? Is it just a sign of the times that
because someone might complain or file a baseless lawsuit, that it's better to turn your
back on a charity that is a national institution?
