Spade in America

You all remember David Spade, right?

That's him. He achieved some notoriety during the frat-boy years of Saturday Night Live, and left the show seeking more money, as all SNLers (except Tim Meadows) eventually do. He also experienced some success on the big screen, although he rode Chris Farley's ample coattails in most of his movies. He then moved on to the small screen, doing a pretty good job as the weasely Dennis Finch in "Just Shoot Me".

Then came Joe Dirt. This may surprise you, but I've never seen Joe Dirt. I don't really want to see Joe Dirt. McEathron tells me it's funny but he also thinks Deuce BigElow and "Crank Yankers" is funny, so his judgment is suspect. Irregardless, you've got to wonder where you can go, career-wise, after playing a mulleted, trailer trash motorhead?

I believe the answer is down.

Spade was most recently spotted (by me, at least) doing a commercial for Capital One credit cards. Granted, it's a pretty clever spot-- but a credit card commercial? Are there no more infomercials to tape?

On the heels of that appearance, I spot this.

To save you time, the relevant info from that page is: WCCO Radio will be holding an 80th Anniversary Gala at the Minneapolis Hilton on September 30th. The event will be hosted by Charlie Boone and Dave Lee, and the event headliner will be... David Spade.

I don't know about you, but I'm not sure David Spade is a good choice for the Good Neighbor based on their listener demographic. Pa Kettle in Pipestone, whose main reason for listening to CCO is hog belly futures and storm warnings, probably doesn't know David Spade. Probably hasn't seen Dickie Roberts. Probably wouldn't understand the "buh bye" flight attendant sketch from SNL.

To recap, David Spade has gone from a modicum of fame on SNL, to a secretary on an OK sitcom, to hawking credit cards, to being the headliner for the anniversary event of a radio station that broadcasts weather and traffic six times an hour, 24 hours a day.

Leading to my only question: Was Steve Cannon too busy?
