Two thoughts on the men's USA Olympic Basketball Extravaganza - err, Team.

1) I'm hoping that Tim Duncan plays every possible minute of every possible game. Why? Quite simply, because I'm a Timberwolves fan. Every extra minute that Duncan plays is an extra minute that KG is just kicking back and recharging his batteries for next year. Wear yourself out Timmy, go ahead. We're all pullin' for ya.

2) I keep reading that our very best NBA players (so like Shaq, Kobe, KG, Kidd, etc) better hope that this team wins gold.

:blinks:

Umm... what? Here's the problem I have. What is the deal with this country having to dominate everything it touches? Who says that our best players have some sort of obligation to sacrifice their offseason to represent their country? I don't. In fact, I think it'd be a lot more interesting to send an actual team to represent the USA. Here's what I suggest: Every year there's a McDonald's All-American High School game. Take the twelve best kids from that game, hire a coach, and let them practice (and play exhibitions) on a regular basis for the summer of the Olympics. Heck, if you can gey buy-in from the NCAA, pay them a small salary for doing it. You don't think a team of HS graduates would absolutely sell out their bodies hustling across the floor playing for a gold medal? I do. And I think it'd be fun to watch, especially with the right coach to get the kids on the same page. So maybe we wouldn't be guaranteed a gold medal. Maybe we wouldn't even be favored. Maybe we wouldn't even medal. You know what - I don't think that'd kill our national psyche. It'd certainly be more interesting than watching AI and Steph, I tell you that.
