My gambit? Again? Already?

Grr.

Maybe it's because it's summer and my mind is elsewhere, but I'm having real issues with gambit subject matter lately. And this doesn't help matters. If Pam can write a novel, how come I can't come up with 200 words every third day? I suppose if I'd been married to Tommy Lee I'd have some interesting experiences to write about...

But I digress.

In the great tradition of Saint Paul mayors, Democrat Randy Kelly has endorsed Republican George Bush for re-election this fall. You may remember Norm Coleman, the savior of Minnesota hockey and the capital city's riverfront, switching from the donkey to the elephant in 1996. It seemed to work, since Norman is now Minnesota's junior representation to the U.S. Senate. As an aside, Coleman spoke to one of my political science classes back at Olaf, and the man is a slimeball. The ultimate definition of a greasy politician.

Again with the digression.

Kelly took a major risk in saying Dubya was his man in '04, considering that now all hard-core democrats will nominate someone else for the mayoral seat next time around. Is there something in it for him? Perhaps, rumor has it that Kelly's announcement came two days after an extended phone call from the President. Could eschewing the party that got him where he is today be next?

Probably. Another example of a politician doing whatever is necessary to further his own self-interests. Which makes sense, because all politicians are, essentially, egomaniacs. What else would drive you do print signs, t-shirts, buttons, all plastered with your name? Even if your motivation is more pure-- like wanting to do good for your constituency-- don't you at least think you can do it better than everyone else?

Bah. The older (and more cynical) I get, the more I think I like term limits.
