The Sports Guy Is Back
- wadE
I put off reading last weeks Sports Guy mailbag because it was Friday, and I didn't need anything to divert
my attention by Friday afternoon.
So on Monday morning I came back to it to discover that the SG is back on ESPN.com's
Page 2.
I was quite glad to read this since Page 2 had become my favorite site to visit. But with the decrease in
contributions from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and Cap'n Jimmy Caple not writing for Page 2 full-time,
it had lost its luster.
It hasn't helped that in the time that the SG was moonlighting on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, they launched the
dreadful Page 2 Quickie (which I hate so much I won't even link to), TMQ was relegated to NFL.com due to some
comments that were considered anti-semetic, ESPN launched Page 3 which stole most of the fluff articles that made Page 2...Page 2, and then they
allowed people like Mike Greenberg to write columns.
Even Page 2 stalwart Brian Murphy can't keep a ship like that together. While he writes solid columns, I find
too many comments like "I saw Larry David in his seat until the final buzzer on Saturday night. Think of the
traffic he would face! Surely, it would curb his enthusiasm." Writing like that gets the Jon Stewart Pun Face/
Collar Grab (on loan from the Johnny Carson Collection).
Ralph Wiley is the only other contributor worth reading regularly. And while I find myself disagreeing with
him often, it's always interesting. Which is more than I can say for Jeff Merron...but I'll let the Sports Guy
deal with him.
All I can say is, SG... welcome back!
