Hoops Friday

A couple of quick and dirty thoughts for a quick and dirty Friday. Or something. Let me throw two paragraphs by ya:

"I'm a starter. I've been a starter here for eight years. I'm not a sixth man," Iverson said after the game. "I'm a starter. I know in this league ... if someone comes back from an injury, if he's a starter he starts. What's the difference? If you're going to cut my time down, cut my time down. It doesn't make any difference. I'm a starter."

That is, of course, Allen Iverson. I can't find his other quote, but it was something along the lines of "How many 7 time all-stars come off the bench? How many MVPs come off the bench?" Well...

Duncan, nursing a sore left knee, scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds in his first game as a reserve to lead the Spurs to a 106-86 victory over Minnesota. "It was a choice I made to limit the minutes," he said about not starting. "I couldn't play a week ago against the Clippers. I obviously wasn't ready. So it was about getting into live action and seeing how (the knee reacts)."

Et tu, AI?

Iverson is a joke. He's not quite as bad as Terrell Owens, but he's close. And perhaps the only reason I don't think he's quite as bad is that the NBA is riddled with idiots, so maybe he just doesn't stand out quite as much. Still, you can be sure I'll be cheering for KG, or Duncan, or perhaps even Shaq (because while a buffoon, he's also a nice guy) to win - gotta side with the nice guys.

And finally... a hearty jeer to CBS for trying to provide all the action in the NCAA tournament last night, but failing. They were showing the end of the Arizona/Seton Hall game, which had 10 seconds left, and without a word of warning they cut away to the end of the DePaul/Dayton game. The transition was so seamless that it was surreal, because the cut went to a shot of the coach at halfcourt, only it wasn't any of the coaches in the game we were watching. It became clear when they showed the two teams coming out of a timeout, and started play... with 25 seconds left (and wearing different uniforms, obviously). So as the point guard brings the ball up the court... CBS cuts back to the Arizona game, which is over, to show the final score for about two seconds, then back to the Dayton game, where thankfully the guard is still running down the clock to take the last shot, so nothing was missed.

Nevertheless, it was some of the worst production I've ever seen in sports broadcasting. Nice try, CBS. Maybe you should leave the sports to people who show it, and instead at this time of year run some episodes of CSI:Campus Security Unit. I know you've got plans for that, after all...

I'm out. Have a good weekend.
