An article in the
West-side Fish Wrap Co. caught my eye today.
The gist of the article is, "U.S. Census Bureau officially will predict that the number of Hispanics
and Asians in this country will triple by the year 2050. Their share of the population will double.
Non-Hispanic whites will nearly be outnumbered."
Many of us in MN won't be surprised by this. We've seen the number of immigrants from Mexico explode over
the past 10 years. Why Minnesota? Some would say because of the high level of Welfare that is paid in our
state. Others would say that many came as migrant workers and never left. Or because Minnesota offered
immigrants a wealth of opportunities.
It's probably a mixture of all three that has brought such an influx of not only Hispanics, but Hmong, and
Somalis in the past several years.
Anyway, is this necessarily a bad thing? A professor from Harvard seems to think so when he recently
published an article, "warning that Americans are quietly permitting their country to become 'two peoples
with two cultures (Anglo and Hispanic) and two languages (English and Spanish).'"
While I'm fervently against cities and counties in Texas and other places that have made moves to make Spanish
the official language of the town, the influence of other cultures isn't inherently bad. In fact, it's
how this country has been formed. Nearly 400 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock our country is
still horribly uptight and puritanical about sex. (But that's a topic for another time)
Besides, more Hispanics in this area can't be bad. Their food is so much better than Scandinavian cuisine!
