I'm probably not as into "personal gaming" as the other two yahoos who run this site. I have a PS2, but it sees the light of day every eight weeks or so. I have a half-dozen games for my Dell, but they get played about as often. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone who devotes time to this sort of thing-- I just do other things to waste my time. :)
That is, of course, until last night. I'd always heard of emulators, but was never sure exactly how they worked. The basics: some geniuses out there have created programs you can install on your PC to make it look / sound / feel exactly like (your choice of gaming systems that you grew up with.) Nintentdo, SuperNintendo, SEGA, Atari... you name it, you can emulate it. I even found an emulator for the TRS-80 that I grew up with. Talk about graphics!
You might think it's a little silly to reduce an ultra-fast, 1.21 gigawatt PC into an example of 1986's top technology. But that's not really the point. If you played Nintendo as much as I did when I was younger, it's reeeaally cool to play Super Mario Brothers again-- you remember all of the tricks, paths, things that seem so random but are burned into your brain because of repetition. OK, using the keyboard and arrow keys isn't quite the same as the friendly rectangular Nintendo controllers, but I can deal.
Last night I downloaded Metroid, Zelda I and II, and all three Super Mario Brothers games. There go all those home improvement projects I wanted to do this spring...
