One Good Riesen

Have you ever had a Stork Chocolate Riesen? And are they really made by storks?

Oh. Storck. Well, that changes things.

I just flipped on the tube after a day that can only be called "whirlwind" to discover another disturbing Riesen ad is on the airwaves. This one doesn't really have any dialogue, but features an odd and European looking man enjoying his chocolate chew a little too much. He looks like he employs Wierd Al as his personal hair stylist.

Why the aversion to something so small and full of chocolate goodness? Well, first, I don't like chocolate. (And no I'm not a communist.) Second, and most important, I'm still bothered by that Riesen commercial from my childhood. You know the one.

I unfortunately was unable to locate a clip of it online, which befuddles me. But it's the one with the scary old man in the maize cardigan, talking to the camera. He then has his bowl-haircut "grandson" hop on his lap for an uncomfortable 20 seconds, and they both enjoy their candy. But it just seemed a little odd to me-- kinda like those Mentos commercials where something seems a little off, a little... European. Off.

Anyways, I don't know where I'm going with this. Yes I do. One of the most entertaining websites around is x-entertainment.com. Matt (the owner and author) enjoys taking a closer look at pop culture, concentrating especially on stuff people our age were into back in the 80s. There are a lot of great articles there to spend your workday reading, although I'm a fan of the multimedia-- loads of 80's commercials here.

Sorry for the lateness. It'll never happen again. Just don't ask me to sit on your lap and eat any of your candy.
