Not Again...

So on a normal day I'd probably write something about
this article, even though I'm no longer an avid drinker, and that's an insane amount of coffee.
But I just can't ignore what is, to me, the more vexing issue. Pete Rose is finally admitting he bet on baseball. If you care to
read my previous thoughts on this matter, check here. The fun part about it
all is that he's saying that he's done it, and that he's sorry, now that his saying it might get him back into baseball. Oh, and
because he's got a new book out. So basically he's lied, but is sorry about it only because there's now a monetary and fame-based
reason for him to be so. Contrite, huh? I could write a billion more words on how ridiculous this all is, but as always, ESPN is
on top of this one with articles from excellent writers (mayhaps because they're paid to write) Jayson Stark and Jim Caple. Their
articles are here, and
here, respectively.
Really though, the bottom line for me is: Pete is now saying he broke the rule that carries the punishment of a lifetime ban
because he thought he wouldn't get caught. Well, he did get caught, and his desire for fame and money shouldn't change the facts.
What baseball needs to do if they want to get him into the HOF is to either make a compromise to put him into Cooperstown with an
asterisk, or change the punishment... say to a 15 year ban for betting on your own games, with a lifetime ban for throwing games.
Let's hope MLB does the right thing instead of the popular thing, for once.
