Political Correctness
- wadE
While I fervently believe that our PC society has caused us to spend an inordinate amount of time
insuring no person's feelings get hurt, today I came across something that even bothered me.
I met Wade for lunch on the 3rd floor food court level of City Center here in lovely downtown
Minneapolis.
While waiting for Wade's Blimpie sub to be made I wandered by the Little Tokyo Express.
For those of you who have never heard of the Little Tokyo Express, it is your standard pseudo-asian
food court establishment.
Anyway, while checking out the menu, I noticed after the listing of Spicy Chicken the menu said,
"Eat like the orientals do!"
I couldn't believe it. I should also point out at this point that this particular establishment
seems to be owned and operated by hispanic people. I point this out because no asian person would
allow that in any way shape or form on their menu...and I'm surprised no one has complained about
it.
For those of you who are confused by why this would be a problem, see here.
Specifically, "When used to describe inanimate objects, 'oriental' is the appropriate adjective,
such as 'oriental rug' or 'oriental jewelry.' In reference to the people and the culture, 'oriental'
is fraught with negative stereotypes ascribed to Asians by westerners.
And if you are easily offended, don't read this.
