mmmmm... Sheryl....

I was halfway through my run yesterday when a familiar chord progression came through my headphones. I was tuned to Cities 97, one of five presets on my walkman-- all five are necessary considering the amount of crap that gets played on radio here. But what was I hearing now? That has to be "The First Cut is the Deepest," a Cat Stevens tune but known best (to me) as a Rod Stewart song. And who is that singing? It's... it's...

Sheryl.

There's just something about a girl who can play the guitar, and I unabashedly admit that Sheryl Crow makes my propeller turn. Sure, she's 41. She's had enough surgery to overcome that. So what if she does a lot of covers? Her versions of "First Cut," "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "Behind Blue Eyes" are just as good to listen to as the originals.

She's dreamy.

I've often told Sara that I was once engaged to Sheryl Crow. I was left waiting up at the altar, she never showed. Well, that's only half true.

The real story happened in Vegas. I was doing a show at the Copa, a gig opening for Harry Connick, no big whoop. Sheryl was in town for a concert at the Sands. While I was in the middle of my killer cover of "Cracklin' Rosie" I saw Sheryl give me the eye from the third row. I, naturally, took that to mean that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with me. We were set to be married the next day, at the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel outside the Tropicana. We showed up, looked deeply into each others' eyes... and decided that we couldn't do it. We couldn't ruin the friendship.

We keep in touch, although not like we used to. Does anyone?
