Those damn New York Yankees...
I went to a couple games this weekend when they were in town. My god, I swear there were more Yankee fans than
Twins fans. You all should be ashamed.
Unless you are from New York, or are older than 40, you should be rooting for the Twins! On the other hand,
the reason so many Yankee fans were at the dome is that they come out of the woodwork around here from both
Dakotas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and even Nebraska.
At least the people who made the long trek were rewarded with convincing Yankee victories.
No matter how much I don't care for the Yankees, I do respect the history and tradition...I think Steinbrenner
is personally running the already precarious economics of baseball into the ground... for instance, a few years
ago when he picked up Jose Canseco at the deadline for a ridiculous amount of money, and then kept him on the
bench for all but 1 or 2 games of the post-season. Just to keep him away from any other team. Shrewed move, if
you've got the funds to make it.
Anyway, I quickly want to tell about my favorite Yankee Stadium tradition. My first game there I sat out in
the right field bleachers...which is notorious for it's "rowdy" crowd. It's gotten so bad that when I was there
they had made the bleachers alcohol free. That didn't stop people from getting annihilated before the game, and
drinking down in the concourse before coming up and yelling at the opposing teams right fielder... poor Magglio
Ordonez. I can still hear them chant incessantly... Faaaaaglio.... Faaaaaaglio...
But I digress... my favorite thing about it was that the crowd would chant each players name in that classic
Yankee Daaaaa-Da Da Da (clap clap clap-clap-clap) until that player would acknowledge them with a wave or a doff
of the cap. Once the player gave a wave the crowd would cheer, and then move onto the next player. If it was
a quick top of the first...they'd pick up where they left off in the top of the second. Keep going until they
got to the starting 9.
Maybe you just have to be there...but it's pretty cool...
Damn Yankees...
