Dreams.. I'm playing first base for the Twins. Wearing number 14, paying homage to Kent Hrbek. Scooping grounders, chasing pop-ups in foul territory. There's a band playing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Wait, it's my band. I'm singing, and the Metrodome is filled with people cheering just for me. After "Ballgame" my band breaks out into our "What I Like About You" / "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." medley. The crowd roars... but what is that sound? That is most possibly the most ANNOYING sound ever... did someone drop a microph...

Oh. The alarm clock.

(cloud of black smoke)

Robe. Slippers. Excited dog, who obviously doesn't need eight hours' worth of sleep. Whiny cat, trying to sound like she's dying from a lack of food. Stumble (twice) down the stairs. Feed the pets. Let the pets out.

Coffee.

Like most of the world, I'm not a morning person. I like to sleep. Love it. Well, let's rephrase. I like sleep most when the alternative is waking up, showering, hopping on the bus, and spending the next nine hours at work. On Saturdays and Sundays I actually enjoy waking up early.

But weekdays? No, thank you. I'm not as cranky as I am, well, defeated. Perhaps that has more to do with my vocation than my desire for sleep, but that's another gambit for another time. Today I'm honoring the one substance that makes the morning tolerable. Yup, coffee. Or, as they say in spanish, um, cafe. The smell, the taste, even the look of coffee helps wake me up in the morning. I drank caffeinated so long that decaf has the same placebo-like affect on me-- it wakes me up.

None of that mocha-chino frappa-chino latte whip with skim, please. I drank my first cup of coffee at a truckstop, and I prefer that truckstop flavor. No cream. No sugar. Dark. Black.

Let's have a toast to coffee, for driving those messy dreams out of our heads so that we can better grasp the reality of our day. Thanks. So much.
