Go... Cougars?
- Alex
It's time to let one of my little secrets out of the bag. All of you who are filling out an office pool this week - I hate you.
It's time for the men's NCAA basketball tournament - the best tournament in the world. No other sport offers up a lose-and-you're-out
tournament with such a large number of teams. It truly is madness! The first weekend is especially insane, when parity and dumb luck often lead
to victories for smaller schools and underachieving teams. There's nothing like it, and it's very exciting.
So why do we have to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator by trying to predict who will win each game? As any number of online
columnists will tell you this week - you can't. It's always the people who don't know anything about the teams who win. So why even try? Why,
instead of asking each other "Did you see that?", do we ask each other "Dude, how many games did you pick right?". It's just not the
right attitude at all.
That's why this year, my new favorite team is BYU. Have you heard about this one? The tournament committee screwed up, in a way. If BYU
wins its first two games, they'd be on track to play a game on a Sunday, and they don't do that as a Mormon-affiliated school. They never should
have been set up for that in the first place. So, in a panicked move, the tournament committee has set it up so that if they win their first two
games (against UConn, and the winner of Stanford/San Diego), they'll *switch* regions.
Obviously, this would screw up office pools all across America. I love it!
So enjoy watching the games this week. Watch the favorites like Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke. See if they're as good as all that.
Watch the unknowns like Xavier, Butler, and Gonzaga. See the reasons they're seeded so highly even though you've never seen them play. Watch
the schools with no chance, like Vermont, Sam Houston State, and Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI, or as my friend C Dizz
calls 'em, "ooie pooie"). Maybe they've got some funky uniforms you can laugh at.
Just watch, and enjoy! And cheer a little extra for the BYU boys. After all, they're on a misson to screw everyone! And we all should love that.
