Dennis Miller - Right wing mouthpiece?
- wadE
I haven't made a habit of watching the new Donahue show on MSNBC...actually, I don't think anyone has made a habit of
it since it's been cancelled and tonight is it's last night.
But I did happen to catch is last night as I was lazily flipping through the upper end of my cable channels. I saw
that Dennis Miller was going to be his guest, and I really enjoy him. So I stuck around.
Good lord! When did Dennis become so conservative? Did he recently have children? Maybe he realized how much he
was paying in taxes now that he's become a highly paid talk show host on HBO. Donahue is a pretty liberal guy...I
actually finding myself agreeing with him quite a bit...he's liberal, but not psychotic liberal. Just like there are
conservatives, and then there is Rush Limbaugh...but that's another topic.
As the show began each of them right at the others throat. Donahue mentioned a couple of newspaper writers he really
likes writing articles about how we should go to war ASAP, and he thought they were wrong. Dennis fired back saying
that maybe he takes the word "wrong" a little too personally, but he didn't like Phil saying that...they were wrong
for Phil Donahue, just like Phil's feelings were wrong for them... seemed like semantics to me...
Anyway the war was the major focus of the night. Dennis thinks that Bush is great, because the man knows his
limitations and surrounds himself with smart people. I can't say whether or not his cabinet is smart or not, but I know
I disagree with a lot that they've done. Dennis also showed support for John Ashcroft. He said that he didn't know
enough about the man, but he hadn't seen him do anything (in regard to the suspension of habeas corpus and other bypasses
of the Constitution) to raise any red flags.
At this point I'm just blown away. I don't think we need to be calling the president an idiot on national TV, but we
shouldn't be writing him a blank check to mobilize our armies to start a war. Last time I checked, the Congress needs to
be involved in any war. Of course there is a little something that allows the president to do anything he wants with the
armed forces for 90 days without any approval...and things like Vietnam seemed to be able to slip by Congress too.
Finally Phil asks Dennis when and why he distanced himself from the Democratic party. Dennis said that a few years ago,
pre 9/11, he heard some Liberal people say that Rudy Giuliani's tactics in New York were "Hitler-like". I think anyone
would agree that comparing him to Hitler is a little over the top, especially since his post 9/11 canonization as a saint.
It's just so hard to imagine that the guy I grew up watching roast the elder Bush in the late 80's and early 90's is
now kissing the ass of his son.
Dennis is still funny, intelligent, and thoughtful...but Dennis what happened? When did you become a yes-man for the
Republican party?
