Bedroom Ramblings
- Wade
A special greeting to you from my bedroom.
No, that's not a come-on.
I am composing today's Gambit from my childhood home in Austin, Minnesota. My bedroom, to be specific. Today's a vacation day for me, so I came down to drop off the pets before Sara and I head out for a long Valentine's weekend on Lake Superior.
Now, that was a come-on.
Being the sentimentalist that I am, it's fun to be in "my room" again. There are some changes (such as my Dad's computer) but, for the most part, it's the same way it was during high school. Heck, I still condsider the paint on the walls "new" despite the fact that it was done in 1992. My mom and I spent a weekend changing the walls from enamel blue to flat blue, since at 16 it was less likely that I would use crayons on the wall.
We were painting in preparation for the arrival of my waterbed, something that was undeniably cool... eleven years ago, at least. My cousin decided that he didn't want the waterbed any longer, hence I was the lucky inheritor. The waterbed is now gone-- a victim of taking up too much space and Sara feeling seasick whenever we slept down here.
The walls, although not bare, are different. Posters of Jose Canseco, the Doors and R.E.M. have been replaced by framed prints of angels and Jesus. It's an improvement, if you ask me. My stereo is gone, but my music is still here. Even now I can spot tapes from Nirvana, Billy Joel, and Milli Vanilli. (I think I had that last one out as a joke, but we really can't be sure.)
Although the TV is different, it's in the same spot as it always was. The hours I spent... watching crap. It was in this room that I saw TV history: Joe Piscopo on SNL, Jerry Burns' last game as the Vikings' head coach, Zach and Kelly breaking up on Saved By the Bell. You know, the important stuff.
There was that year that I moved my bedroom to the basement. I think that was my rebellion phase. Pretty lame, I know. When you're an only child, you don't want to rebel too much. Hey, I wore a lot of black. Yes, for nearly a year I spent my time downstairs in our unfinished basement, with tacked up sheets for walls. Tacky, yes. My "nightlight" was my neon blue phone.
Like many things, it was cool at the time.
