One of the fun things about baseball is that you never know. Sure, football tells us that on Any Given Sunday, blah blah blah. . . but in baseball it's true on any given day that anything could happen. Take Bob Walk, for example. (Take my Bob Walk, please!) In 1992, only a year away from the end of his career, he went 10-6, starting half his games and being used as a reliever in the rest. In that year's League Championship Series he pitched four innings in relief in game 2, and gave up four runs. So with Pittsburgh's entire year on the line, down three games to one going into game 5, who gets the ball to start the game? Bob Walk. Who then went out and threw a complete game three-hitter. It really is just like Joaquin Andujar said: Youneverknow.
Incidentally, that's two fine mullets in a row. And a nice 'stache to go with it.
I do think he's throwing a screwball in the picture on that card. Doesn't it look like his hand is twisted so that his palm's out to his right? I could be on crack, I admit. . .
Bob is apparently a light-hearted guy with all the pitches. I'm not entirely sure if that's a compliment or not. But what I'd really like to examine is that Pirates logo. In 1989, as shown, the logo is of a guy in a hat with a big moustache and a wide collar. Not exactly a menacing figure. The 2005 logo, if you'll examine their homepage, has gone with a sort of skull and crossbats, if you will. It's got a nice eyepatch, a bandana, a menacing goatee, and a very pirate-ish earring. I'm not saying I like the new logo, exactly, but it is an upgrade.
No sign of anything bearing the retro logo at the Pirates team store, but you can buy this abomination. You're welcome.
